About the Artist
Hair Stylist, Herbalist & Dancer
Hello, I'm Rachel Helzer. I grew up in Long Beach California in the 90's and moved to the Bay Area 12 years ago. Rachel was a popular name for girls when I was growing up, so all of us Rachel's went by our last names to avoid confusion. Sobriquet Helzer stuck, through beauty school and to this day I go by Helzer. I do like the name Rachel, and I answer to both so feel free to use whichever name feels good to you.
I practice Hair Craft, combining creative haircuts and color with a deep love of nature. I am a master stylist with 12 years behind the chair, and a certified Western Herbalist. I bring a holistic approach to my hair styling and product recommendations. I use my herbal background to offer unique hair and scalp spa treatments that include aromatherapy, scalp analysis, hair teas and cranial massage.
My training started with Bumble and Bumble as well as Wella International. After graduating from their programs I took classes with Nick Arrojo, and got into curly hair with Ouidad and Deva curl techniques. A curly girl myself, I specialize in unique hair textures and transformative hair cuts.
Today I work with the eco conscious brand Davines. Education is the driving force of my practice, bringing clients the best my hair craft has to offer. By working with sustainable beauty and herbal companies I offer the highest quality of products that are safe for my clients and gentle on the planet.
As a queer womxn I strive to provide a safe space for each one of my clients to express themselves. I love creative hair coloring! Rainbow color melts, mermaid waves, pink ombrés, purple highlights, color blocks, platinum pixies, gem stone tints and more! If you can dream it I can help you get there in a way that maintains the integrity of your hair and scalp. I also love glamorous hairstyles, finger waves and updo's! Wedding hair actually makes me happy. I am Certified with EasiHair Pro as an extensions specialist and I am well-versed in wigs, hair pieces and hair additions.
Health and beauty go hand in hand for me, and being active is essential to a well rounded life. This is why I am ecstatic to start teaching small group Dance + Fitness class with The Boombox Studio and with Bossy SF. I am a professional dancer with over two decades in the industry. Classically trained in ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance. I attended the Orange County High School of the Arts; Commercial Dance Department. After high school I went straight into professional work studying with the Brockus Project dance company, dancing for T.V and theater productions and spent four years dancing in the parades at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.
When I moved From L.A. to San Francisco I immersed myself in the bay area dance culture learning new alternatives and traditional styles of global dance. Vogue, African Haitian, Hip Hop,& Heels to name a few. These classes and the wonderful teachers who inspired me to keep dancing have made a huge impact on my dance and teaching style today. I am Currently a member of Bossy S.F. dance company, and perform monthly GoGo dancing both with the company and independently.
At the heart of all of my work is a deep understanding that we all want to be seen for our unique and authentic selves. Helping my clients feel beautiful in their own skin is what it's all about.
Every body ( space intended) is beautiful and there is no such thing as a bad hair day.
